Pre-commissioning devices before installation
Required:
Access to configurable WiFi access point, router/modem
Suitable power supply for Clever Life device
Access to CleverLife Home App
Definitions:
SSID – WiFi network name
WAP – Wireless access point
Step 1 : Configure Wireless Access Point
This process will create a temporary WiFi network with the identical network credentials of the final site at which the devices will be installed.
Description : When first setting up the Clever Life device, you need to tell it what the network credentials should be it looks for to connect to the internet. Creating a temporary network with the same credentials as that of the final installation site allows you to configure the Clever Life device before installing onsite.
1. On your WAP or modem/router, locate the information on the label to allow access into the device settings. This is usually an IP address (example 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) or a http address (example http://mymodem). Enter this information into the url tab of a web browser of the computer or mobile device currently connected to your network.
2. The username and password to access your modem/router settings should also be written on the label
Example below for reference
3. Once successfully connected to your modem/router settings page, you will see a setting/tab for WiFi.
4. In the WiFi setting you will see your current SSID and Password configuration.
5. Next there are 2 options to proceed
a. Temporarily rename your existing network credentials to identically match the site details
b. Use a spare guest network to create a temporary network with the exact credentials to match the site details.
It is Important to note here that the credentials MUST BE IDENTICLE – a misspelt SSID, lower case or uppercase error or an extra ‘space’ will prevent the device from connecting to the final site network
6. Once you have successfully created the temporary network, connect your mobile device to this network to proceed.
Note – this process can be reversed once all required devices have been commissioned. If using a guest network to configure the device, please note that most guest networks only allow for up to 10 devices to connect at any one time. Note – ensure your temporary network is set to 2.4GHz only and if applicable the band steering switch is set to off.
Step 2 : Download and install the CleverLife Home App.
Scan the QR code to download the App and follow the
onscreen instruction to setup or login to your account.
For the full set of App instruction please visit https://cleverlife.com.au/cleverlife-home-app/
If you are installing the app for the first time you will need to create an account and will subsequently then become the home owner of that account. If you are setting up the account on behalf of the final end user, please note the account is able to be transferred to them at anytime through the ‘Ownership Transfer Function’ in the App. In the APP, go to the menu page and FAQ section for more info on how to complete an ownership transfer.
1. Follow the App instruction on how to add a new device.
2. Once the device has been successfully added, you should edit the name of the device in the app device page to match its final installation location (example – living room fan) and mark the package accordingly to ensure it is installed in its intended location.
3. The device can now be powered down, disconnected and put back in the box ready for transport to site.
Note – once the device is installed in its final site and connected to the network, some WAP’s will allow you to configure the MAC address name. This is a worthy process as it can greatly aid in any fault finding on a network fault condition in the future. The MAC address of the device can be found in the device page settings - device information.
Step 3 : Install the device in its final location
1. Please follow the installation instructions provided with your device.
2. Power on the device.
3. Within 30 seconds it should connect to the onsite wifi network using the credentials you have already loaded into the device in the pre-commissioning.
If the device is installed at its final site and does not connect to the network, the pre-commissioning has failed, and you have given the device the incorrect network credentials. The device will need to be reset and repaired with the correct information.
These instructions may also be used in an alternate scenario. You may wish to re-configure your network credentials to the information assigned to your Clever Life device when it was first commissioned. This would be the process if you would like to install a WAP or new modem/router and not wish to re-configure all your Clever Life devices to the new WiFi credentials.
A useful App that is often used when assessing the RF Environment onsite is Wifiman (Ubiquiti Inc. APP) and can be downloaded on IOS and Android devices. This App is very useful for checking WiFi signal strength and bandwidth at the Clever Life device installation location. As well as identifying RF interference and 2.4GHz / 5GHz separation.
The screenshot below is of a very ‘noisy’ Rf environment, in this example the WAP was set to channel 2 to provide suitable performance of the connected devices without delay or fault.
